Meet Veer Group & The Ocean Opportunity Lab (TOOL)
Serial entrepreneurs on a shared mission to inspire and show the world a new aera of leadership and solutions for the global society:
TOOL and Veer Group embarks on a voyage together, mobilising resources to set sail with what is still considered to be “Mission Impossible” - a clean deep sea container shipping company, fuelled by sails, fuel cells - and powered by women, both on land and as crew.
The world’s first female founded commercial clean shipping company based in Canada & Bahamas, founded by Sailcargo “Jungle boat” builder & tall ship captain Danielle Southcott.
Last year, she was discovered by maritime heavy weight disrupter and serial entrepreneur Birgit M. Liodden - the first woman to go start the global MeToo conversations in maritime, and last year the first female entrepreneur ever to reach top 100 influential names of global shipping, while being awarded Top10 technology leader by the prestigious Lloyds List.
Sandbox Ship and Virtual Gateway to the Ocean & Energy Innovators
Liodden left her role as first female director of globally leading industry arena Nor-Shipping some years back, announcing she’d further strengthen her efforts on environmental business and diversity.
Founded 2019, TOOL launched the world’s first floating entrepreneur lab - retrofitting the first veteran ship to run on 100% waste based biofuel. TOOL then navigated lockdown utilising the period to build a digital ecosystem platform - a global gateway to ocean & energy innovators. Her TOOL for scaling sustainable ocean business today operates in first commercial beta, with partners from across more than 40 countries.
This Web3.0 two-sided marketplace focuses on digitising and further enhancing the innovation cluster model that Norway has become famous for across the ocean sectors over the past decades. Built on tech-for-good it helps map, connect and match innovation resources across ocean & renewable energy.
Enabling the change makers from within, while at the same time providing access and inspiration for talents and outsiders to explore the extensive range of solutions, innovators and pioneering geographical hotspots that already exist, aiming for more people to join the industries as change makers.
Today, Liodden is backed by value-driven investors from across ship owning, shipbuilding, fishery, renewable and aqua culture - uniting prominent family business owners and successful serial entrepreneurs.
Uniting Female Entrepreneurs across Ocean & Energy sectors
Last year Liodden discovered Southcott and Veer Group as part of the first ever global mapping of female founders across ocean & energy.
Veer was included in the early version of 100 Inspirational Female Founders of Ocean & Energy - an initiative to be officially launched with the former Prime Minister of Norway, and initiator of the UN High Level Panel for Sustainable Ocean Economy, April 2023.
The initiative - that already partnered with Equinor & Techstars Energy Accelerator - aims to get female founders on the radar, and inspire more women to start and build companies in hardcore male dominated fields.
The two founders started exchanging experiences and visions. The conversations continued across the Atlantic in the months to come, as they realised they would be the perfect fit to mobilise change and attention on a larger scale.
Connecting the Future & the Past - sailing cargo
Danielle Southcott decided to take her experiences from Sailcargo to the next stage and a more industrial approach on clean transportation. Veer Voyage is building a shipping company focusing on deep sea micro containerships, which will enable niche cargo owners with a zero carbon focus to completely remove emissions from their ocean transportation, using sail and hydrogen fuel cells. She targets enabling clean shipping for true pioneers much earlier than the large and traditional operators.
Southcott´s visions for Veer aligned well with the framework from TOOL´s first MVP ship - clean ships, focused on diversity at all levels including crew, and connecting commercial operations with enabling flagships for a value chain of clean-tech innovators.
The partners now team up to unite the optimal mix of cargo owners, capital stakeholders and technology providers. TOOL will support with connecting the 'village' that it takes to grow companies of the future. Together they are committed to bringing hope, inspiration and prove that clean deep sea ships is not a far off future scenario.
Global Roadshow & Behind the Scenes
While official launches are planned for Europe’s largest social diversity conference in April and during Nor-Shipping week in June as part of a global roadshow - the founders welcome all change makers and fans of clean ocean solutions to get onboard and follow their shared journey and expedition towards getting to zero.
Follow Liodden & Southcott on their voyage - powered by a new generation of change makers - and take part in their brave expedition to realise what many consider Mission Impossible.
