Get to know Blue Institute Labs from Newport in Rhode Island

Blue Institute Labs is a female and veteran owned public benefit corporation supporting BlueTech startups in the New England area. Their mission is to break down silos, educate, collaborate and to facilitate the creation of innovative solutions for clean water, climate resiliency, and healthy and secure oceans.

​Blue Institute Labs is founded by Judith Underwood, who has over 15 years’ experience supporting scientific development and technology transfer at research and education institutions including MIT, the United Nations, and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.

​Blue Institute Labs is located at Innovate Newport inRhode Island, a coworking space and private office provider with the goal of supporting the Greater Newport region as a driving ecosystem for business enablement and innovation.

Blue Institute

Blue Institute is a registered charitable organization focused on breaking down silos and collaborating on challenges in the blue economy. Their work focuses on clean water access, scarcity and climate change, ecosystems and human impact, urbanization and coastal areas, global water demand and management and ocean health and microplastics. Blue Institute Labs pursues its mission through a range of activities focused on education, community engagement, research and entrepreneurship.

Blue Innovation Centre

Blue Institute Labs, together with their sister nonprofit organization - Blue Institute - is developing a water access Blue Innovation Center. The Blue Innovation Center is designed to advance startups, commercialize technology, support research, create local jobs, and expose local students and those attending the BLUE Semester - especially females and other under-represented groups through experiential learning and internships to the myriad of opportunities in the burgeoning Blue Economy.

Blue Institute Labs Incubator

Blue Institute Labs’ incubator program has supported over 30 blue tech and climate tech startups since its inception in 2017. Their incubator offers an ecosystem experience that brings BlueTech and ClimateTech startups together with industry, academia, students, Workforce, NGO's, and government agencies in an open collaborative ecosystem to create solutions to clean water, climate resiliency, and healthy and secure oceans. The program is delivered through a hybrid virtual program that identifies and develops an ocean access location to support the needs of partners and members for collaborative and innovative ocean access testing, training, workforce development, student internships, and business and technology commercialization.

Blue Economy Navigator

Blue Institute Labs have developed a Blue Economy Navigator that is identifying organizations across the globe that advance the blue economy. They are adding all accelerators, incubators, cluster managers, research institutes and other advocacy programs of the Blue Economy.
